Full NelsonSex Position

Deep, brief, and run entirely by whoever is doing the holding.

In the full nelson sex position, one partner sits back against the chest of a reclining partner, facing away, and the partner underneath hooks both arms beneath the top partner's knees to hold the legs up and back. Deep? Very. Intense, too, and over fairly quickly.

The name comes from wrestling, and the wrestling part is precisely where people get it wrong. In the ring, the hands lock behind the neck. The version worth doing keeps the hands on the legs, well away from the neck, and everything on this page is built around that one difference.

What The FullNelson Is

Whoever goes underneath sits up or leans back against a headboard or a solid pile of pillows, legs stretched in front. The other partner lowers into their lap facing away and rests back on their chest. Up to here, it is simply a seated reverse cowgirl. Then come the legs. The top partner lifts both, and the partner underneath slides forearms under the knees and draws them up and back into a wide V.

In wrestling, a full nelson threads the arms beneath an opponent's arms and locks the hands behind the neck. The sex position keeps the threading. Done properly, it drops the lock entirely.

Plenty of nelson sex position pictures online show hands clasped behind the head. Those are the pictures not to copy.

Why The Full NelsonPosition Goes So Deep

Raising the legs up and back tilts the top partner's pelvis, opening the angle so entry goes deeper than in ordinary reverse cowgirl. It also takes away nearly every way that partner had of moving. Feet in the air. Knees held. Back pressed against someone else. They can squeeze, arch slightly and talk, and that is about the full list.

Pace and depth therefore pass to the partner underneath, who moves by rocking their own hips and by drawing the legs in or letting them relax out. That handover is what this position is really about. Flexibility matters less than trust.

Trust and a stop signal are the actual prerequisites, then, ahead of strength or mobility. Would the partner on top feel comfortable saying stop and having it happen that instant? If not, pick something else tonight. The sexual communication guide explains how to have that talk beforehand instead of halfway through.

It is also brief. The holder's arms and back tire quickly, so treat it as a short chapter inside a longer session.

How To ActuallyDo It

  1. 1

    Build the backrest first

Pile firm pillows against the headboard until the partner underneath can lean back with the lower back supported. Soft ones flatten the moment two people lean on them.

  2. 2

    Settle into the seated version

The top partner settles back into the lap facing away, feet still on the bed. Enter, then pause in this easier shape before lifting anything.

  3. 3

Say the stop signal out loud

Choose a word, plus a double tap on the forearm for moments when talking is hard. Either one means the holder begins lowering the legs immediately. No discussion.

  4. 4

Lift one leg, then the other

One leg at a time, the partner on top raises a knee while the partner underneath hooks a forearm under it. Hands settle on the thighs or behind the knees and stay put.

  5. 5

Stop drawing back when the hamstrings say so

Bring the legs toward the chest until the partner on top says enough, then hold there. More depth comes from small rocks of the hips underneath, never from folding further.

Hold The Legs,Not The Neck

Begin with the neck, the top partner's neck specifically. Of everything involved, it is the one part that should bear no load whatsoever. Folding the legs back already rounds the spine and squeezes the chest, and hands behind the head would push the chin down into that folded body, restricting breathing and straining the neck together. So the hands live on the thighs or behind the knees. They never wander upward, not for a second and not as a joke.

The top partner's hips and hamstrings come next, and they set the true limit. Their flexibility decides how far the legs travel. The holder's enthusiasm gets no vote. Pulling or burning down the back of the thigh? Ease off. With the knees bent further, the legs can rise with much less stretch.

Last, the holder's lower back. Leaning back with a person on your chest while supporting two raised legs is hard labor for the arms and the base of the spine. Firm pillows behind the lower back matter more than anything, and keeping the elbows tucked lets the torso share the load. Deep angles also forgive friction less readily, so a little lube before the legs go up saves a pause later.

Getting out deserves the same care as getting in. Lower the legs slowly, one at a time, forearm still underneath, instead of letting go and letting them drop.

Half NelsonAnd Other Versions

The half nelson lifts one leg up and back and leaves the other foot planted. Nearly all the angle survives, the holder does half the work, and the top partner gains a foot to push with, which hands some control back. For regular use, pick this one.

Or the top partner can hold their own legs, hands tucked behind their own knees. The holder's arms get a break, and, more importantly, the person being folded now decides how deep the fold goes. For anyone unsure about being held, it makes a good first attempt.

Lying flat shifts the load. Both partners lie back on the bed with the legs still held, so nobody's lower back is stuck supporting a seated posture. The result is shallower, rather like pearly gates with the legs lifted.

Dropping the legs and going back to plain reverse cowgirl counts as good judgment, not defeat. That habit is what keeps the full version fun. Want a deep, legs-back angle face to face instead? The anvil is its nearest relative.

The versions, drawn

Drawing of a full nelson variation: only one of the rider's legs is hooked up and back, the other foot planted for push.

The half nelson

One leg held, one foot planted. Most of the angle stays, the holder's work halves, and some control comes back to the partner on top.

Drawing of a full nelson variation: the rider clasps behind their own knees while the lower partner simply holds the waist.

Holding your own legs

Hands behind your own knees, so the person being folded decides how far the fold goes. The better first attempt.

Drawing of a full nelson variation: both people recline flat on the mattress, the rider's raised legs still held.

Lying flat

Both partners lie back on the bed with the legs still held. Nobody holds a seated posture, and it gets shallower.

Who The Full NelsonSex Position Suits

It suits couples with trust already well established, whose stop signal has been tested on something milder first. The partner on top needs fairly loose hamstrings and has to truly enjoy handing over control, not just put up with it. The partner underneath needs a strong back, strong arms, and enough attention to catch small changes with no face to watch.

Skip it with neck, hip or lower back trouble, and on any night either of you feels unsure about being held. Like the depth but not the hold? The mating press gets deep without anyone holding anyone from behind.

What GoesWrong

  • Copying the neck lock from the pictures

The hands-behind-the-head version is the famous one, and the one to leave out. With the legs folded, any pressure on the neck makes breathing harder. Every hand stays below the shoulders.

  • Letting go of both legs at once

Unsupported legs drop onto hips that have been held open. Bring each one down with a forearm still beneath it until the foot touches the bed.

  • Holding on after the arms start to shake

A tired hold gets jerky and uneven, and that is worse than a short, steady one. Move to the half nelson while the holder still has something in reserve.

Questions PeopleAsk

What is the full nelson sex position?

The full nelson sex position is a seated reverse cowgirl in which the top partner reclines against the partner underneath, who hooks both arms beneath the knees and holds the legs up and back. Expect it to be deep and intense, and plan on short stretches.

Why is it called the full nelson position?

It takes its name from a wrestling hold in which the arms pass under an opponent's arms and lock behind the neck. The sex position borrows the arms-under shape. It should never include the neck lock.

Is the full nelson safe?

It is reasonable as long as the hands stay on the legs, a stop signal is agreed in advance, and the legs are released slowly. Avoid the version with hands behind the neck, which restricts breathing and strains the neck.

What is a half nelson in sex?

A half nelson holds just one leg up and back while the other foot rests on the bed. The holder works less, the hips are spared some strain, and the partner on top keeps a measure of control.

How much flexibility does a full nelson take?

The partner on top needs reasonably flexible hamstrings and hips, and that flexibility sets how far back the legs can go. Tighter bodies can still make it work by bending the knees more or switching to the half nelson.
