Pearly GatesSex Position
Rear entry for people who do not want to get up.
The pearly gates is the laziest rear-entry position going. Both partners lie back and face the ceiling. The giving partner is underneath, flat on the bed. The receiving partner lies on top of them and settles in, back to chest. Entry happens from below and behind. Nobody holds a pose and nobody needs a hand free for balance. That last part matters more than it sounds.
Depth is shallow here, and that is fine. What you get instead is comfort and four hands with nothing else to do. It is a good pick late at night when the ambition has run out. It is also one of the few positions you can genuinely hold for a long stretch without anything going numb.
What The PearlyGates Is
One partner lies flat on their back on the bed. The other lies down on top of them, also on their back, head near the partner's shoulder. Both face the ceiling. The legs of the person on top rest between or outside the legs underneath, and entry comes from below.
It is rear entry without any of the kneeling. Compare it to the rhino, which points the same direction and asks for roughly ten times the effort.
Getting into it is the part people fumble. The partner underneath should lie down first, in the middle of the bed rather than near the edge. The partner on top sits down beside the hip, then leans back slowly onto the chest below. Rolling on from the side rarely works. Sitting first and reclining second works almost every time.
Head placement matters more than you would guess. Let the head of the top partner fall beside the shoulder rather than onto the collarbone. That keeps the chest underneath free to breathe. It also puts two mouths within talking range, which becomes useful for steering later.
WhyIt Is So Easy
Every part of both bodies is supported by the mattress. No arms are holding anyone up. No legs are burning. That is rare, and it is why this one can run long past the point where other positions quit.
Movement is small by design. Short hip motion from either partner is all you get, and all you need. Because the pace stays gentle, this is a friendly position for anyone working on stamina.
Small movement does not mean no technique. The partner underneath can press both heels into the mattress and lift the hips an inch, then lower them again. That single motion is the engine of this position. A steady rhythm beats any attempt to thrust.
Surface choice matters here. A very soft mattress swallows the hips underneath and kills what little range exists. A firmer surface gives the heels something to push against. A couch cushion under the lower back is a decent fix if the bed is too plush.
How much lift do you need?
Slide it to see how a little hip lift changes the angle. Flat is comfortable, and a small prop makes things line up.
How To GetInto It
- 1
Lie down first
The giving partner lies flat on their back in the middle of the bed. A pillow under the hips is worth setting up now.
- 2
Climb on backward
The receiving partner sits down facing away, then leans back onto the partner's chest. Take it slowly, because this is the wobbly part.
- 3
Line up the hips
Shuffle around until the hips sit right. Small adjustments do more here than big ones.
- 4
Plant the feet
The receiving partner bends the knees and puts the feet on the bed. That gives just enough lift and control to move.
- 5
Wrap and settle
The partner underneath brings both arms around the front. From here it is small movements and no rush.
The HandsFree Part
Here is the real selling point. The partner underneath has both arms wrapped around from behind, with clear access to the whole front of the body. Nothing is trapped and nothing is holding weight.
The partner on top has free hands too, which does not happen often. Most positions spend at least one hand on balance. This one spends none. If you like slow and connected over athletic, the romantic positions run on the same logic.
GettingThe Angle Right
The angle is the tricky bit. Lying flat on flat does not naturally line anything up, so expect a minute of shuffling. A pillow under the lower partner's hips fixes most of it.
The partner on top can also bend the knees and plant the feet on the bed. That lifts the hips slightly and opens the angle. Bending one knee up and leaving the other flat works too. Shallow angles benefit from lube more than deep ones do, so keep some within reach.
Two inches changes everything. If the top partner slides toward the foot of the bed, the angle flattens and contact drops off. Sliding back toward the shoulders steepens it again. Say something plain, such as 'slide up a little', and test it instead of guessing.
Feet give you more control than hips do. Planting both heels wide and letting the knees fall open lifts the pelvis and holds it there. Pressing through the balls of the feet raises it a touch higher. Tired legs can drop one foot flat and hook the other over a shin.

WhoIt Is Best For
This suits tired people, which is most people most nights. It also suits couples with a size difference, since nobody is supporting anyone's weight. Anyone who finds kneeling rough on the knees will appreciate it.
It is a weak choice if you want depth or speed. There is not much of either available here. Save it for the slow end of the evening, and pick something steeper from the position guides when you want more.
The two roles feel quite different, which is worth naming out loud. The person on top feels supported and slightly weightless. The person underneath feels pleasantly pinned but supplies most of the motion. Swap roles on another night if that trade starts to seem lopsided.
Getting out is easier than getting in. The top partner rolls to one side rather than sitting straight up. Sitting up first tends to pull hair and knock heads.

Questions PeopleAsk
What is the pearly gates sex position?
The pearly gates is a rear-entry position where both partners lie on their backs. The giving partner is underneath and flat. The receiving partner reclines on top of them, facing up, with entry coming from below.
Is the pearly gates easy?
It is one of the easiest positions there is. The bed supports both bodies, so no arms or legs are holding anything up. The only real work is lining up the angle at the start.
How is the pearly gates different from the rhino?
Both are rear entry, and that is where the similarity ends. The rhino has both partners kneeling with the receiver's chest down and the hips high. The pearly gates has everyone lying flat and facing up.
Why is the angle hard to find in the pearly gates?
Because two flat bodies do not naturally line up. A pillow under the lower partner's hips solves most of it. Bending the top partner's knees and planting the feet helps as well.
Is the pearly gates deep?
No, and it does not try to be. The lying-down angle keeps it shallow. If depth is what you want, this is not the position for it.
