Side-Lying / Position Guide
SpooningSex Position
Both partners on their sides, with almost nothing asked of anyone.
Spooning is both partners lying on their sides facing the same way, with the giving partner behind. It is rear entry without any of the effort that usually comes with rear entry, and it is the position most likely to still be working forty minutes in.
It has one real problem, which is that the default angle does not quite line up. Almost everything written about spooning skips this. Solving it takes one adjustment, and after that the position does what it promises.

What SpooningIs
Both people lie on their sides, the receiving partner in front with the knees drawn up somewhat, the giving partner behind with the hips tucked in close. Nobody is holding themselves up and no muscle group is under load. That is the entire appeal, and it is a bigger appeal than it sounds.
Depth is naturally limited because the legs stay close together and the angle is shallow. This position does not go deep and is not trying to. It is built for duration rather than intensity.
It is the standard recommendation across lists of position guides for late nights, early mornings, pregnancy, injury, and any night where energy is the limiting factor rather than enthusiasm.
The AngleProblem
Lying flat on the side, the angle is often slightly wrong, and the usual response is to give up on the position. The fix is for the receiving partner to draw the top knee further up toward the chest. That single change opens the angle and solves most of it.
The second half of the fix is the giving partner tucking their hips in lower and closer rather than pressing forward from the same height. Coming from slightly below lines things up in a way that pressing harder never will.
If it still does not line up, a pillow under the receiving partner's hip tilts the pelvis and finishes the job. Between those three adjustments almost every version of this can be made to work. Compare doggy style, which has the opposite problem of arriving too steep too fast.
How far up is the top knee?
Slide it to see how drawing the knee up opens the angle. This is the adjustment that makes spooning work.
How To ActuallyDo It
- 1
Both on your sides, same direction
Receiving partner in front, giving partner behind, hips close. Take a moment to settle before adjusting anything.
- 2
Draw the top knee up
The receiving partner pulls the top knee toward the chest. This is the adjustment that makes the angle work, and the one most people skip.
- 3
Tuck the hips in from below
The giving partner comes in low and close rather than pressing forward. Height matters more than pressure here.
- 4
Add a pillow if it still misses
A pillow under the receiving partner's hip tilts the pelvis and opens the angle the rest of the way.
- 5
Use the free hands
Both people have at least one hand free, which is rare. This position leaves more room for everything else than any other.
ComfortAnd Duration
Nothing here is under strain, which is why it lasts. The one pressure point is the underneath shoulder, and a pillow arranged properly under the head takes care of it.
The giving partner's bottom arm is the other nuisance. Stretching it out above the receiving partner's head, or sliding it under their neck, is more comfortable than leaving it trapped.
Shallow angles and a slow pace mean friction builds gradually rather than immediately, so lube matters here for the long session rather than the first minute. This is also the easiest position in which to simply stop and rest without anyone getting out of position.
VersionsWorth Trying
The receiving partner rolling slightly forward onto their front opens the angle further and moves this closer to prone bone, with more depth available.
Rolling slightly backward instead, so the shoulders open toward the ceiling, brings faces into range for kissing and conversation and turns a quiet position into a talkative one. Roll back further with the bottom leg straight, have the giving partner kneel astride it, wrap the top leg around their waist, and the position becomes the pretzel.
Facing each other on your sides is a different position with the same energy cost. It is shallower again and harder to keep aligned, but the eye contact is worth the trade on the right night.

WhoIt Is Best For
This suits late nights, early mornings, long sessions, and anyone for whom energy is the constraint. It is a common suggestion during pregnancy and while recovering from injury, because nothing bears weight and nothing is held.
It is a poor fit when depth or intensity is the point, and the limited range means fast is not really available. If the angle cannot be made to work after the knee, the hips and the pillow, the position may simply not suit your two bodies, which is a normal outcome rather than a failure.
What GoesWrong
Pressing forward when the angle misses
The adjustment is the receiving partner drawing the top knee toward the chest, and the giving partner coming in low rather than pushing. Force is the one thing that does not fix a spooning alignment.
Skipping the pillow under the hip
When the knee and the low approach still do not line it up, a pillow under the receiving partner tilts the pelvis and finishes the job. It is the third adjustment and most people stop at the first.
Wasting the free hands
Both people have at least one hand free here, which is rare. A position this gentle is not doing much on its own, and the hands are most of what makes it worth staying in.
Questions PeopleAsk
What is the spooning sex position?
Spooning is a side-lying rear-entry position where both partners lie on their sides facing the same direction, with the giving partner behind. Nothing bears weight, which makes it one of the easiest positions to hold for a long time.
Why does spooning not line up properly?
The default flat side-lying angle is usually slightly off. The receiving partner drawing the top knee up toward the chest fixes most of it, and the giving partner tucking their hips in low rather than pressing forward fixes the rest.
Is spooning good during pregnancy?
It is one of the most commonly suggested positions, because no weight rests on the abdomen and neither partner has to hold themselves up. Anything specific to your pregnancy is a question for your doctor or midwife rather than a website.
Is spooning too shallow?
It is shallow by design, since the legs stay close together and the angle is gentle. Rolling slightly forward onto the front opens it up if more depth is wanted.
How do you make spooning last longer?
It already lasts. Nothing is under load, so the limit is usually interest rather than stamina. A pillow under the head and one under the receiving partner's hip remove the two pressure points that eventually appear.
