Deep / Position Guide

Doggy StyleSex Position

Deep by default, and far more adjustable than its reputation suggests.

Doggy style is the receiving partner on hands and knees with the other partner kneeling behind. It is one of the two or three positions almost everybody tries early, largely because it works on the first attempt without instruction.

What gets missed is how much can be changed inside it. The height of the hips, the arch of the back, how far the chest drops toward the bed and how wide the knees sit all change the position substantially. Most people run one version for years without finding the others.

What DoggyStyle Is

The receiving partner rests on hands and knees. The giving partner kneels behind, hands on the hips or the lower back. That is the whole setup and it takes about two seconds.

The angle comes from the back. Arching the lower back downward tilts the hips up and increases depth. Rounding it the other way reduces it. That single movement is the main adjustment, and it is available at any moment without breaking anything.

It is deep by default, which is why it appears on every list of position guides and also why it goes wrong more often than gentler positions. Depth is not something you build toward here. It arrives immediately.

Why It GoesDeep So Fast

Two things combine. The angle of entry from behind is naturally steeper, and there is no body-to-body contact acting as a brake. In missionary the chests meet and that limits how far anything travels. Here nothing does.

That is worth saying plainly, because the usual first experience of this position is one movement that goes further than anyone planned. It is not a sign of incompatibility. It is a setup with no built-in stop, so the stop has to be deliberate.

The reliable fix is the giving partner keeping their hands on the hips and controlling distance with the arms rather than driving from the hips. Shortening the stroke costs nothing and solves most of it. Prone bone is the flatter version of the same idea, and it limits depth naturally because the legs close.

How To ActuallyDo It

  1. 1

    Set the hands and knees

Knees roughly hip width, hands under the shoulders. Wider knees lower the hips and reduce depth, which is a useful dial on its own.

  2. 2

    Start shallow on purpose

The first few movements should be shorter than feels natural. This position does not need help finding depth.

  3. 3

    Set the arch

The receiving partner arches or flattens the lower back until the angle is right. This is the main control and it belongs to them.

  4. 4

    Hands on the hips

The giving partner holds the hips and manages distance with the arms. It is far more precise than trying to control it from the hips alone.

  5. 5

Drop the chest if the arms tire

Coming down to the elbows or flat to the bed changes the angle and takes the strain off the wrists and shoulders.

ComfortAnd The Wrists

Wrists complain first, then shoulders. Dropping to the forearms fixes both and steepens the angle at the same time, which is why so many sessions end up there without anyone deciding to. A pillow under the chest makes that version genuinely restful.

Knees on a firm mattress get sore quickly. A folded blanket underneath is a small change with a large effect on how long this can go on.

This is a position where lube earns its place rather than being optional garnish. The angle is steep and there is no gradual approach built in, so starting smooth is the difference between a good version and one that ends early.

VersionsWorth Trying

Widening or narrowing the knees changes depth without anyone consciously adjusting. Knees together closes everything up and shortens the reach. Knees wide drops the hips and opens the angle.

Dropping the chest to the bed with the hips staying high is the deepest variation, and it is best treated as somewhere to visit rather than live. A pillow under the hips supports the same angle with much less effort. Lifting the chest instead, with both partners kneeling upright and the receiving partner's forearms held back, is the triceratops, and that one is worth agreeing on before anyone tries it.

Standing at the edge of the bed with the receiving partner kneeling on it solves height differences and gives the giving partner far better leverage. For the lying-down version of a similar angle, spooning gets there with none of the work.

WhoIt Is Best For

This suits people who want depth without a setup, and couples whose height difference makes face-to-face positions awkward. It is also the easiest position in which to change speed without losing the thread.

It is a weaker choice when closeness is the point, since there is no eye contact and talking is harder. Wrist and knee trouble both argue for the forearms version. If the depth is consistently too much rather than occasionally, the answer is usually hip height rather than abandoning the position.

What GoesWrong

  • Starting at the depth you finish at

This position does not need help finding depth, and it arrives immediately. The first few movements should be shorter than feels natural, which is the single adjustment that changes how most people rate it.

  • Taking the arch away from the receiving partner

Arching or flattening the lower back is the real depth control and it belongs to the person underneath. Managing it from behind removes the only fine adjustment available.

  • Driving from the hips instead of the hands

Hands on the hips and distance managed with the arms is far more precise than pushing from the hips alone. It is also what lets the giving partner stop short of full depth reliably.

Questions PeopleAsk

What is the doggy style sex position?

Doggy style is a rear-entry position where the receiving partner is on hands and knees and the giving partner kneels behind them. It is deep by default because the angle is steep and nothing limits the distance.

Why does doggy style feel too deep?

Because there is no body contact acting as a brake, so full depth is available from the first movement. Lowering the hips, widening the knees, or flattening the arch in the lower back all reduce it immediately.

How do you make doggy style more comfortable?

Drop to the forearms to take strain off the wrists and shoulders, put a folded blanket under the knees, and use lube. A pillow under the chest makes the lowered version comfortable enough to stay in.

What is the difference between doggy style and prone bone?

Doggy style keeps the receiving partner up on hands and knees with the hips raised. Prone bone has them lying flat on their front, which closes the legs and naturally limits depth.

Who controls the depth in doggy style?

Both, but the receiving partner has the stronger control through the arch of the lower back and the height of the hips. The giving partner controls stroke length with their hands and arms.
