BicycleSex Position

The leg movement everyone treats as decoration is the whole mechanism.

The bicycle has the receiving partner on their back with the knees drawn up and the lower legs raised, moving slowly in the air or held by the giving partner who kneels in front. It gets filed under novelty because of the pedalling, which is a shame, because the pedalling is the only part that matters.

Every other position sets an angle and then holds it. This one lets you change the angle continuously while both sets of hips stay exactly where they are. That is genuinely unusual, and once you notice it the leg movement stops looking like a gimmick and starts looking like a control you did not have before.

What TheBicycle Is

The receiving partner lies on their back and draws the knees up toward the chest, leaving the lower legs free in the air. The giving partner kneels close in front, and either lets the legs move on their own or takes them at the ankles or calves and moves them.

Pedalling here means alternating. One leg comes higher while the other drops lower, then they swap, slowly. Each alternation tips the pelvis very slightly to one side, which moves the point of contact rather than the depth.

It shows up on lists of position guides filed as advanced, which is wrong. Nothing is held up, nothing is lifted, and it asks no more flexibility than getting the knees to the chest. It is one of the easier deep positions to get into.

Why The MovementActually Matters

Both legs high gives the steepest angle and the most depth. Both legs lower drops it back toward plain missionary. That much is predictable. The interesting part is the middle, where one leg is high and one is low.

That uneven position tilts the pelvis diagonally, and it puts pressure somewhere that symmetrical positions simply cannot reach. Most couples find one uneven spot that works noticeably better than the level version, and finding it is the point of the whole exercise.

Continuous small changes also solve the sameness problem that ends long sessions. Nothing goes numb because nothing stays identical for more than a few seconds. The mating press is the fixed version of roughly the same angle, and comparing them shows what the movement is buying you.

How To ActuallyDo It

  1. 1

Start with the knees to the chest

Get comfortable at the standard depth before anything starts moving. Everything after this is an adjustment from here.

  2. 2

    Hand the ankles over

The giving partner takes the ankles or calves. It is far easier for one person to control the movement than for both to coordinate it.

  3. 3

Move one leg at a time

Raise one while the other lowers, slowly. Both legs moving together just changes depth, which you already had.

  4. 4

    Hunt for the uneven spot

Somewhere in the alternation there is usually one position that stands out. When you find it, stop there rather than continuing the cycle.

  5. 5

    Slow the pedalling right down

This looks like a fast movement and works far better as a slow one. Fast pedalling is a workout. Slow pedalling is the position.

ComfortAnd The Hamstrings

Knees to the chest is comfortable for almost anyone. Legs straight up is a real hamstring stretch and not everyone has it, so go to a mild stretch and stop rather than treating the straight version as the target.

When the giving partner is holding the ankles they are deciding how far the legs go, which means they are deciding how much stretch the other person is in. Ask once early. It is a small question that prevents a long quiet stretch of someone enduring it.

A pillow under the lower back supports the tilt and takes strain off the spine, and the angle here is steep enough that lube makes the opening minutes considerably smoother. Start shallow, because the depth arrives fast at this angle.

VersionsWorth Trying

Holding the ankles wide apart rather than together opens the angle and reduces the hamstring stretch at the same time. It is the friendliest version for tight legs and it loses very little depth.

One leg straight up with the other flat on the bed is the uneven version made permanent. Couples who like the bicycle tend to park here rather than keep pedaling.

Resting the legs against the giving partner's chest rather than holding them frees both of their hands and keeps the angle steady. For the same tilt handed over to furniture instead of muscles, a wedge does the job without anyone holding anything.

WhoIt Is Best For

This suits couples who get bored of a fixed angle, and anyone who has noticed that the good spot is slightly off center rather than straight on. It is also one of the few deep positions that asks almost nothing of the receiving partner physically.

It is a weaker choice if hamstrings are tight and the wide version does not solve it, or if you want a position to settle into rather than adjust. If the pedalling feels silly, try it slower before writing it off, because speed is what makes it look like a gimmick.

What GoesWrong

  • Moving both legs together

Both legs traveling at once is just rocking, and it does nothing the standard position was not already doing. One leg rising while the other lowers is what changes the angle, and it is the entire point.

  • Pedalling fast

It looks like a fast movement and works far better as a slow one. Speed skips straight past the uneven spot that the alternation exists to find.

  • Forcing the legs straight

Legs straight up is a real hamstring stretch and not everyone has it. The wide ankle version reaches the same angle without the stretch, and choosing it early is better than discovering the limit under load.

Questions PeopleAsk

What is the bicycle sex position?

The receiving partner lies on their back with the knees drawn up and the lower legs raised, moving slowly or held by the giving partner who kneels in front. Alternating the legs tips the pelvis and changes the angle without either person moving their hips.

Is the bicycle position just a gimmick?

The pedalling looks like one, but the leg movement is the only position on this site that changes the angle continuously while both sets of hips stay put. Done slowly it is a control rather than a trick.

Do you need to be flexible for the bicycle position?

Only for the straight legged version. Knees to the chest is comfortable for almost anyone, and holding the ankles wide apart opens the angle while reducing the hamstring stretch almost entirely.

Why does one leg up and one leg down feel different?

Because it tilts the pelvis diagonally rather than straight back. That puts pressure somewhere symmetrical positions cannot reach, and one uneven spot usually works better than the level version.

How fast should you pedal in the bicycle position?

Much slower than the name suggests. Fast pedalling turns it into a workout and loses the point. Slow alternation, pausing wherever it feels best, is what makes it worth doing.
