WheelbarrowSex Position
A ninety second position, and there is nothing wrong with that.
The wheelbarrow has the receiving partner face down with their hands on the floor and their legs held up at the hips by the standing partner. It looks like the cover of something, and it is genuinely deep, and it lasts about as long as a set of push ups because that is essentially what one person is doing.
Most guides describe how to get into it and go quiet about how it ends. That is the wrong emphasis. Getting in is easy. The part worth planning is the landing, because the failure mode here is somebody's face arriving at the floor faster than expected.

What TheWheelbarrow Is
The receiving partner starts face down, then places their hands flat on the floor and takes their weight through the arms and shoulders. The standing partner lifts them by the hips or thighs and holds the legs at their waist. The receiving partner's body ends up roughly horizontal.
The angle is steep and the depth is considerable, because the hips are tilted and nothing is limiting the reach. That combination is the appeal, and it is real.
It sits at the demanding end of every list of position guides, and unlike most entries there the difficulty is not flexibility. It is a straightforward strength and endurance problem for both people at once.
Why It IsAlways Short
The receiving partner is holding a plank on their hands while somebody else moves them. Shoulders and wrists fatigue in well under two minutes, and once they go, they go quickly rather than gradually.
The standing partner is carrying most of a person at arm's length in front of them, which loads the lower back far more than it loads the arms. That is the injury risk in this position and it is worth naming plainly.
So treat it as a set rather than a session. Ninety seconds of this and then a planned move to something else is a success, not a failure. Trying to make it last is how both people end up sore for reasons unrelated to sex. Stand and carry has the same honest limit.
How much is being held?
Slide it to see how much support changes the difficulty. Less holding means longer, and there is no prize for the hardest version.
How To ActuallyDo It
- 1
Agree how it ends first
Decide now that the standing partner lowers the legs and the receiving partner goes to their forearms. Agreeing this in advance is the whole safety plan.
- 2
Start at the edge of a bed
Feet on the bed, hands on the floor, and almost no lifting. Learn the angle before anyone carries anybody.
- 3
Lift from the legs, not the back
The standing partner bends their knees and keeps the load close to their body. Reaching out at arm's length is what hurts backs.
- 4
Put something under the hands
A folded towel, a pillow or a rug under the receiving partner's hands and forearms. Bare floor is where the wrists give out first.
- 5
Stop before either of you fails
Ninety seconds is a good run. Come down deliberately while everyone still has the strength to do it in a controlled way.
ComfortAnd The Landing
Wrists are the first thing to go, then shoulders, then the standing partner's lower back. A cushion or folded towel under the hands buys real time, and dropping to the forearms roughly doubles how long the position is comfortable.
The landing is the part that matters. The standing partner lowers the legs while the receiving partner walks their hands back or lowers onto their forearms. Nobody lets go. Nobody steps backward suddenly. This sounds obvious right up until it is not.
Blood rushing to the head is normal in this position and it is also the reason to keep it short. If the receiving partner feels lightheaded, that is the signal to come down immediately rather than push through it, and coming down is a two person job.
VersionsWorth Trying
The bed edge version, with the receiving partner's feet resting on the bed rather than held up, gives most of the angle for a fraction of the effort. It is the version couples actually keep.
Resting on the forearms rather than the hands lowers the front end, changes the angle and removes the wrist problem. This is the practical version of the position rather than the photograph of it.
Holding at the thighs rather than the ankles shortens the lever and makes the whole thing far more manageable. For the standing rear entry angle with none of the lifting, doggy style at the edge of a bed gets close.

WhoIt Is Best For
This suits couples who like the occasional spectacle and are honest about how long it will last. It works best when both people are reasonably strong and neither is precious about a position that ends after a minute and a half.
It is a poor fit for anyone with wrist, shoulder or lower back trouble, and that applies to both roles for different reasons. If you want the depth without the strain, the bed edge version keeps almost all of it. Wanting to try it once is a perfectly good reason, and so is deciding once was enough.
What GoesWrong
Not agreeing the ending before the beginning
The standing partner lowers the legs while the receiving partner goes to their forearms. Improvising the exit while somebody is holding a person up is how this goes wrong.
Holding the load away from the body
Bent knees and the weight kept close. Held out away from the body it becomes a lower back problem for the standing partner within seconds.
Treating ninety seconds as a failure
Ninety seconds is a good run in this position. Stopping deliberately while both people are still fine is the correct ending, not a sign it did not work.
Questions PeopleAsk
What is the wheelbarrow sex position?
The wheelbarrow has the receiving partner face down with their hands on the floor while the standing partner holds their legs up at hip height. The body ends up roughly horizontal, which creates a steep angle and considerable depth.
How long does the wheelbarrow position last?
Usually under two minutes, and often closer to ninety seconds. The receiving partner is holding a plank on their hands while being moved, so wrists and shoulders fatigue fast. Treat it as a short set rather than a whole session.
Is the wheelbarrow position dangerous?
It carries more risk than most positions. The main hazards are the standing partner's lower back from lifting at arm's length, the receiving partner's wrists and shoulders, and an uncontrolled landing. Agreeing how it ends before you start removes most of the risk.
How do you make the wheelbarrow easier?
Rest the receiving partner's feet on the edge of a bed instead of holding them, or have them come down onto their forearms. Holding at the thighs rather than the ankles also shortens the lever and makes it far more manageable.
Why do I feel lightheaded in the wheelbarrow position?
Because the head is below the heart. It is expected in this position and it is also the reason to keep it short. If it happens, come down straight away, and do it as a two person move rather than dropping.
